More about the Tour of the Dragon Mountain Bike Race

The ‘Tour of the Dragon’ is neither a road bike race nor a classic mountain bike race. It is categorised as an ultra-marathon mountain bike race because of the very challenging roads and rough terrain which racers had to bike through.

The race starts in Bumthang and spans 268 km which will take the racers through four astounding mountain passes before finishing in the capital city of Thimphu.

Along the way, cyclists will have the privilege of passing through Bhutan’s most enchanting countryside, charming villages and pristine forests.

Participants who took part in the race this year

The 268 km race is considered as the toughest one-day mountain bike race in the world due to the distance, high elevation and varying climatic conditions which cyclists will have to endure.

However, this does not discourage the 48 bikers who participated in this year’s Tour of the Dragon race which includes 17 international participants.

Regarded as an experience of a lifetime, the Tour of the Dragon Mountain Bike Race was organised by the Bhutan Olympic Committee. Participants are each entitled to a finisher’s certificate and event t-shirt.
